A host of studies demonstrate the potential of service-learning to increase cultural sensitivity and/or reduce stereotyping (Astin, Sax, & Avalos, 1999; Boyle-Baise, 1998; Boyle-Baise & Kilbane, 2000; Driscoll, Holland, Gelmon, & Kerrigan, 1996; Dunlap, 1997; Eyler, Giles, & Braxton, 1997; Eyler & Giles, 1999; Fenzel & Leary, 1997. Joseph 2 and his wife, Janice M. Boyle, filed a complaint against C & N, asserting claims for bodily injury and loss of consortium. C & N held an insurance policy issued by Zurich American Insurance Company (Zurich). The policy required that C & N provide notice to Zurich of any suit brought against it. C & N informed Zurich about Joseph's injury. Potential in achieving these goals (Boyle-Baise, 1998, 2002; Fuller, 1998, Hones, 1997, Sleeter, 1996). In this study, I examined an effort to effectively incor-porate a community-based tutoring project into a graduate-level ESL teacher preparation course. Multiple studies have shown that multicultural service-learning experiences provide a greater awareness of diversity (Anderson, Swick, & Yff, 2001; Baldwin, Buchanan, & Rudisill, 2007; Bell, Horn, & Roxas, 2007; Boyle-Baise, 2005; Stachowski & Visconti, 1998; Wade, 2000) as well as helping preservice teachers to develop a more complex understanding of their own ethnicity (Bollin, 1996). Teacher preparation for multicultural education centers around learning about cultural diversity, examining relations of power and inequality, and responding affirmatively to sociocultural differences in schools and classrooms.
